Graduation Photo Buttons: What Families Wear To The Ceremony

August 14, 2026·6 min read

Graduation photo button made from a senior portrait

In a gymnasium with six hundred people in folding chairs, families find each other by what they are wearing. A row of relatives with the same face pinned to their shirts is not subtle, and that is exactly the point.

Graduation photo buttons do two jobs at once: they identify who everybody came for, and they survive the ceremony. The program gets recycled. The button ends up on a corkboard, a car visor, or a memory box.

Here is how to order them well.

Which photo to use

The senior portrait is the obvious choice and usually the right one — it is already lit, cropped, and printed at a usable resolution. But the button families talk about most is often the pair: the senior portrait beside the kindergarten picture.

If you use a childhood photo, send the best scan you can make of the original print rather than a phone picture taken at an angle. Old photographs hold up better than people expect when the scan is decent.

What to put on it

Four elements, same as any strong button design:

  • The graduate's photo, cropped so the face fills the circle.
  • Their name.
  • The graduation year, and the school if there is room.
  • School colors in the ring so the whole family's buttons match.

How many per graduate

Six to ten covers the immediate family and the relatives who travel in. Add a second run if you are hosting a party — a bowl of buttons by the guest book means every guest leaves with the graduate's face, and it costs less per person than almost any other favor.

Families with two graduates in the same year usually order a matched pair design. It reads as one family, which is what the day is about.

Order timing for spring ceremonies

Spring is the tightest season in this business. Senior portraits arrive late, announcement lists get finalized late, and everyone orders in the same three weeks.

Production takes 7 to 10 business days after proof approval. Ordering four to six weeks before the ceremony keeps the whole thing calm. Ordering the week of is where the stress lives.

After the ceremony

The buttons outlast the day. They go on dorm corkboards, work lanyards, and refrigerator doors. Years later they turn up in a box and stop somebody in their tracks — which is the actual reason to make them.

Send us the portrait and the details, and we will build the set for your whole family.

Why photo buttons travel further than you'd think

Custom photo buttons are small, wearable, and easy to hand out — which is exactly why they have such a long life. People pin them to backpacks, lanyards, jacket lapels, memory boards, and bulletin boards in church fellowship halls. A button moves through a community in ways a card or a flyer never could.

You bring the photograph and the moment. We help with sizing, layout, and the subtle design choices that keep the focus on the face, the feeling, the message. The button becomes the little reminder that travels home in someone's pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my child's official senior portrait?

+

Yes, as long as you have permission from the photographer to reproduce it. Many studio contracts include a print release — send that along with the file if you have one.

Can we combine a childhood photo and a senior portrait on one button?

+

Yes. A side-by-side then-and-now layout is one of our most requested graduation designs.

How early should I order for a May ceremony?

+

Four to six weeks out. Spring is the busiest season, and production takes 7 to 10 business days after you approve the proof.
