John 3:16 Activities for Kids: A Verse They Can Grow Into

John 3:16 is often the first verse a child learns. It gets recited before dinner, at VBS, in the car. Familiar, though, doesn't always mean understood.

There are at least five enormous ideas packed inside that one sentence: God loved, God gave, His only begotten Son, whoever believes, everlasting life. A child can say all of it perfectly and still be waiting for someone to explain what it means.

• "…that whoever believes in Him…" — What does believing actually look like?

Choose one. A single activity done well beats three rushed crafts.

• The gift box — an empty wrapped box passed around while you talk about what God gave and why a gift has to be received.
• Whoever means whoever — kids write names of people who are included in 'whoever' and pray for them by name.
• Say it your way — each child rewrites John 3:16 in their own words and reads it aloud.
• Verse in order — phrase cards scrambled and reassembled, then recited together.
